The common frog has obviously enjoyed the changeable weather this year. The first mild spell early in February brought them to the ponds for mating and early spawn appeared. Whether much of this early spawn will survive the cold few days we had at the end of the month will remain to be seen. However with more mild days the frogs are once more active as can be seen on my Common Frog gallery page.
Regularly during the day the females were spotted waiting for the male frogs to make their advances and were significantly more males than females there was quite some competition at times. However the result is that there is now huge amounts of spawn in shallow still water around the country. Should bring in the birds when the spawn begins to hatch!
