Sacré Bleu – Marine Nationale make it four in a row

Congratulations go to the Marine Nationale side who last night retained “Le Crunch’ Trophy with a hard earned 19 – 15 win over the Royal Navy at Brickfields, Plymouth last night.  They edge ahead in the series 7 – 6, the first time since the fixtures were re-introduced in 2005.  They also achieved for the first time a winning sequence of four matches.  This is quite an achievement considering the great difficulty both sides have had in winning away from home.  The Royal Navy have only achieved it once in 2008 (Paris) whilst the Marine Nationale are clearly getting better at travelling having won away in 2015 (Portsmouth) and last night.

The Royal Navy awarded four new caps.  The first to flyhallf Rich Cadywould.  He has served a long apprenticeship as a travelling reserve who has not needed to be used; so many congratulations on at last joining the very special ‘Silver Tie’ club.
Jack Basher was the second player to win his cap having started at centre.  The Malta International started his playing career and won U23 representative honours as a flanker but has moved in the centre position this year.  Congratulations on being the Royal Navy’s latest International capped player.
The other two new caps came on from the replacements bench.  They were Ollie Mason (with ball in hand) and Lewis Cooper (on right in support).  Once more congratulations on a special achievement.
A notable evening for Gaz Evans who won his 25th Royal Navy cap.  He started at tight head a position who grew to love in the 2010 match where his final score beat the Army.  At loosened out of sight is Kyle Mason one of the three Malta Internationals playing last night.
Gaz then moved across to loose head prop.  The two positions probably rank 3rd and 4th in order of preference to the four positions he.  At hooker is Harry Collins, the third Malta International in the Navy’s side.
